JOSHUA TREE DOLLAR GENERAL UPDATE

In the long-finished battle over the proposed Dollar General store in Joshua Tree, the winners appear to be the losers and the losers seem like they won after all. Reporter Mike Lipsitz explains…

Back in August of 2017, Dynamic Development, developer of the proposed 9,100 square foot, Dollar General store in Joshua Tree must have been feeling pretty good. After all they’d survived more than five years of environmental challenges, public protests, lawsuits, and appeals that went all the way to the California State Supreme Court. Next, came the successful review of the developer’s water and sewer plans which left the mostly hostile board at Joshua Basin Water District no choice but to approve a vital “will serve” letter. And so with all of that behind them, ground-breaking for the general merchandise chain store on the northwest corner of Sunburst Avenue and State Route 62 appeared inevitable – only it never happened. A year has gone by with no action and even the precious “will serve” letter expired just over a week ago. Calls to the Dynamic Development for comment were not returned.

While the project appears to be dormant, it is far from dead. Joshua Basin Water District General Manager Curt Sauer told Z107.7 News that barring any design changes, another “will serve” letter is theirs for the asking.
