We’re accustomed to cell phone towers disguised as palm trees that look very little like palm trees, or pine trees that don’t really resemble pine trees. Reporter Dan Stork said that a cell phone tower will be installed in Joshua Tree disguised as a sign, and it really will be a sign…
On September 3, the San Bernardino County planning Commission approved a Conditional Use Permit for a cellular communications tower on the grounds of Sky View Chapel in Joshua Tree that is disguised as a sign. The 55-foot tall tower will, according to Reverend Abe Casiano, the pastor of Sky View Chapel, serve multiple purposes: it should bring improved cell phone and communications service to area Verizon customers (which Reverend Casiano views as a community service), and it will provide the church with a sign. Church deacon David Bazzle told us that Verizon approached the church about the project. The church will receive lease payments on a rate schedule set by the state. Bazzle said that Verizon is eager to install the communications facility. The tower is depicted in an enhanced photograph that appears with this story at z1077fm.com.
