The Yucca Valley Planning Commission, with only three members in attendance, met last night to once again discuss an electronic sign for Joshua Springs Calvary Chapel. Managing editor Tami Roleff was at the meeting and files this report…
Pastor Jerel Hagerman of Joshua Springs Calvary Chapel addressed the Yucca Valley Planning Commission last night to say that the church is willing to work with the commission and town council so that it can have its 28-square foot electronic sign. He added that signs have changed tremendously since the commission last worked on the town’s sign ordinance; he suggested that the ordinance be amended so that churches, schools, and charitable organizations be exempted from regulations that govern signs in residential areas. The three members of the commission in attendance agreed that a variance was not the proper way to allow the church to have its sign, and agreed that revising the ordinance in a limited manner may be the way to go. And so in a 3-0 vote, with Commissioner Jeff Evans absent, and the resignation of Charles McHenry, the commission voted to table the variance request and ask the council whether it should amend the sign ordinance. If the commission does work on amending the ordinance, it most likely wouldn’t be until at least September.
In other business, the commission voted to make minor modifications to the town’s second dwelling unit ordinance to match changes in state law.
And finally, the commission was advised that 54 homes are under construction in the town, the most in 10-11 years.
