The Joshua Basin Water Board will honor retiring Shirley Bolha and address new chromium-6 standards tonight. Reporter Mike Lipsitz takes a close look at the agenda…
Following recognition of Shirley Bolha, who retires after 47 years with the Joshua Basin Water District, the board of directors will take up a number of important items at tonight’s regular 7 p.m. meeting. Near the top of the agenda is a presentation on funding a $31,000 hydro profiling project, thought to be necessary to establish the district’s need to address new regulations for limiting chromium-6. If—or more precisely—when the profiling project shows the District to be out of compliance for limiting chromium-6, the data collected will qualify the district to pursue grants from an available pool said to exceed $7 billion. As part of that same issue, General Manager Curt Sauer will seek board approval for the District to take part in a research project which aims to determine how best to use ion exchange to treat the water system for chromium-6. The would occur in partnership with the Bureau of Reclamation and the Mojave Water Agency. The meeting takes place at the District Office on Chollita Road in Joshua Tree.
