JOSHUA BASIN WATER DISTRICT RATE INCREASES ARE FUNDING CHROMIUM REMOVAL, PIPELINE REPLACEMENT

Joshua Basin Water District General Manager was the guest on last Friday’s (October 8) Up-Close Show, where he discussed the many ways he helps keep the water flowing to the Morongo Basin. Reporter Jef Harmatz recaps the interview…

Minor water rate increases are needed in Joshua Basin to remove naturally occurring deposits of Chromium 6. Though Joshua Basin’s water is currently well below federal standards for the metal, upcoming requirements enacted by the state will require new filtration methods.

“It’s such a trace element, it’s actually measured in parts per billion. The state dropped that down to ten parts per billion, and the prior standard, which was controlled by the feds, was 100 parts per billion. To drop it down to ten is a significant hit to quite a few water districts in California, with millions of dollars in capital implications.” — Mark Ban, General Manager, Joshua Basin Water District

Ban also discussed the in-progress 20-year plan to replace metal pipelines with high-tech PVC, the overall good condition of the basin’s water sources, and much more.
