The current issue of Joshua Basin Water District’s Tier Drop newsletter highlights the district’s water savings. It reports “cumulative conservation June through August 2020 at 21.33 percent.” Reporter Mike Lipsitz offers some background on what that number really means…

The district’s Public Information Officer, Kathleen Radnich, explained that during the 2016 draught, the state-imposed water conservation mandates. Joshua Basin Water District was required to cut-back water usage by a stunning 28 percent. So, for the period between June 2016 and May 2017, the district met that mandate and avoided fines and penalties.  Once the drought was over the governor dropped the conservation mandates; however, our Board of Directors opted to maintain a 20 percent voluntary conservation target,” said Radnich. Joshua Basin Water District customers embraced that challenge and met the conservation target. The success of that effort means that when new mandates are imposed in the future, and they almost certainly will be, people in Joshua Basin Water District will find minimal adjustment will be necessary.
