Customers of the Joshua Basin Water District recently received notice about Chromium-6 in the water. Reporter Mike Lipsitz explains why, and says it will become a regular occurrence…

Customers of the Joshua Basin Water District received a notice with their most recent water bill, informing them their drinking water may exceed the state’s maximum contaminant level for Chromium-6. And while the notice went to all rate-payers, many are served from wells that did not test positive for the naturally occurring heavy metal. Also important, the state dramatically lowered the maximum allowable Chromium-6 in drinking water necessary to meet state standards. General Manager Curt Sauer characterizes the condition as chronic, indicating that ratepayers can expect to receive the notices about every four months while the district looks for ways to mitigate the problem. Meanwhile, ratepayers can relax; the tap water is still safe to drink, and be used for all the things it has always been used for.
