IT’S SUMMER, SOME DRIVING TIPS BEFORE YOU TRAVEL FROM THE CHP

Now that summer is upon us, here are a few driving tips to consider when planning your vacation. Reporter Jill Carey Michaels shares important reminders…

Summer in California is the time when many people visit new places.

CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley suggests, “Good planning will make your trip safer for everyone – the driver, passengers, and other motorists,” “Be sure you and your vehicle are both ready for your summer adventures.”

Summer driving is more dangerous than winter because vacationing motorists, unfamiliar with an area, create traffic and drive unpredictably while admiring scenery or trying to find their way.

A few safety tips offered by the CHP to ensure roadway safety are to check the tires, lights, and radiator system, as summer temperatures place extra stress on all systems.

Never leave pets, children, or the elderly alone in a car for any length of time. If you see an unattended child or animal call 9-1-1.
And no matter how wide, the shoulder of a roadway is not a safe place for repair work. If your vehicle has a problem, such as a flat tire, move it to a secure location.

The California Department of Transportation has a mobile app for traffic information road conditions and construction, or visit http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov.

And above all… Buckle up!
