Package thieves, known as “porch pirates,” patrol neighborhoods with the intention of stealing packages from front porches while the homeowners are away. There are a number of steps that you can take to reduce your likelihood of becoming a victim of package thieves. When placing your order online, you may opt for signature confirmation. Many delivery companies also allow you the chose an alternative delivery location for some orders. If you have a home surveillance system, make sure it is functioning properly, as these systems can detour would-be thieves. If a package is stolen, the footage can often be used to track down the culprit. If you are unsure of whether you will be home when your package is delivered, you may consider having a friend or neighbor collect it until you return home. Alternatively, you may want to have the packages delivered to your work. You can also have your mail held at the post office.
