April is Move More Month. With this reminder about the health benefits of walking, here’s managing editor Tami Roleff…
April is Move More Month, established by the American Heart Association as a way to encourage people to walk at least 30 minutes per day and take a step toward better health. Walking may improve people’s health by helping them maintain a healthy weight, prevent and manage conditions such as heart disease and diabetes, strengthen bones, ward off depression, and improve balance and coordination. To help make walking even more effective, people should think FIT, which stands for:
- Frequency; walk at least 500 steps within seven minutes at least six times per day;
- Intensity, walk 3,000 steps within 30 minutes at least once a day; and
- Tenacity, walk at least 10,000 steps a day.
