IRS PHONE SCAMMERS ARE BUSY RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW, DON’T FALL FOR IT

Now that the end of tax season is here, federal officials are warning about scammers who claim you owe money for taxes. The IRS imposter scam tops the list of tax scams to be on the lookout for this year, according to law enforcement officials. Managing editor Tami Roleff gives tips on how you
can avoid being a victim…

“We have just received a notification regarding your tax filings from the headquarters which will get expired in the next 24 working hours. And once
it get expired after that, you will be taken under custody by the local cops as there are four serious allegations pressed on your name at this
moment.”

I’ve gotten four phone calls just in the past week from a robocaller who claims I have a problem with my taxes. Each call comes from a different
phone number and it ends with the request that I return the call. This is a scam. The IRS or state tax agencies NEVER initiate their first contact with taxpayers over the phone (or by fax or e-mail), nor do they take payments over the phone. If you’ve received a phone call like this, do not return the call. Block the phone number if you can, and report it to links below:

If they claim to be from the Internal Revenue Service, report it to [email protected], subject line: “IRS phone scam.”

You may also report these calls to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA (www.tigta.gov), which has jurisdiction over IRS-
related matters.

If they claim to be from the Treasury (non-IRS), report it to [email protected].

For any report of a fraudulent call, include:

  • The exact date and time that you received the call(s)
  • The phone number of the caller
  • The geographic location and time zone where you received the call
  • A description of the communication.
