INPUT SOUGHT ON PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE YUCCA VALLEY SEPTIC PROHIBITION

The Water Quality Control Plan for the Colorado River Basin—which includes the Morongo Basin—governs the septic tank discharge prohibition for Yucca Valley. The septic tank prohibition went into effect in 2012 and required the Hi-Desert Water District to build a wastewater treatment facility. Financial, legal, economic, and technical issues caused delays in the construction of the collection system in Phase 1. The water district requested that phases 2 and 3 be combined, and also requested a time extension to complete the project. Managing editor Tami Roleff says the California Regional Water Quality Control Board is requesting public comments on a revised amendment to the plan…

Highlights of the amendment to the Yucca Valley septic tank prohibition will:

  • Combine Phases 2 and 3 into a single Phase 2;
  • Extend the deadline for Phase 1 from June 30, 2021 to December 31, 2023;
  • Extend the deadline for Phase 2 from December 31, 2025 to December 31, 2031;
  • And provide a 180-day compliance period for residents to connect to the collection system after it becomes available.

The California Regional Water Quality Control Board will accept written comments, hold a public workshop, and will hold a public hearing about a proposed amendment to revise the septic tank prohibition for the Town of Yucca Valley.

The public comment period ends May 7.

A public workshop will be held 9 a.m. April 13.
