IN PART 4, WE LOOK AT NEW STATE LAWS FOR 2017

As we welcome a new year, we continue our look at new laws that took effect January 1.
Terminally ill patients in California will be allowed to use experimental drugs, which do not have full regulatory approval, to decide when they want to end their lives. It authorizes, but does not require health plans to cover these drugs and protects physicians from disciplinary actions if they recommend them once other treatment options have been exhausted.
People under 18 years old cannot be charged with prostitution. Instead, they will be treated as victims.
The state has banned the use of “Redskins” as the name of a school team or mascot.
And as of March 1, all single use toilets in businesses or government agencies must be identified as gender neutral.
