In high school sports, the Yucca Valley High School Trojan boy’s soccer team retained the Elks Cups for a second year in a row, after an impressive 8-1 victory against cross-town rivals 29 Palms High School, Tuesday night at Tom Nicoll Memorial Stadium.
“Despite this short and unprecedented season, our boys showed incredible improvement,” said Assistant Coach Adán Mendoza. “Keeping the Elks Cup for a second year in a row… gives us (coaches) confidence that the program is on a path to success.”
Mendoza said that senior varsity captain Carlos Rodríguez was named player of the match for scoring an astonishing five goals. He added that the achievement was bittersweet, as it marked the best and final game the senior would play for the program. Due to unforeseen circumstances, both Rodriguez and fellow senior varsity captain Alexis Cortez will not be attending the last game of the season.
Coaches George Rodriguez and Adán Mendoza joined the team in honoring the captains for dedicating all four years to the program. “We’ve known these kids prior to having them on the team, playing youth soccer,” said Mendoza. “It’s been an honor and privilege to see them both grow and excel both in the sport, and as young men. We are proud, to say the least, and hope they continue to pursue their passions.”
The final game of the season will take place at the Trojan stadium, against the Indio Rajas, Thursday May 6 at 4 p.m.
