With the ongoing spread of COVID-19, shoppers continue to clear grocery store shelves of many essential products. One such product becoming difficult for many shoppers to locate is active dry yeast, which is considered a vital ingredient for making most varieties of bread. If you are interested in baking your own bread and if you’re struggling to find active dry yeast, Reporter Andrew Dieleman says you can make your own sourdough bread without purchasing yeast, if you have the patience…
To make your own sourdough bread from scratch, you must first create a “starter,” which replaces active dry yeast with wild yeast derived from the fermentation and maintenance of a simple mixture of flour and water. To make your starter, fully mix 4 ounces of all-purpose flour with 4 ounces of water in a 2-quart container, cover with plastic wrap, and let rest in a 70 to 75 degree Fahrenheit room for 24 hours. Mix in another 4 ounces of flour and 4 ounces of water every 24 hours for the next 4 days. On day 5, you will have a “starter” filled with wild yeast, perfect for making homemade sourdough bread.
