At its November meeting, the Morongo Basin Healthcare District Board of Directors discussed its declaration that racism is a public health crisis. CEO Jackie Combs told the board that the district will actively participate in providing racial equity training to all staff. She discussed health disparities due to race. Black women are three to four times more likely than White women to die of pregnancy-related causes, and Black babies are twice as likely to die before their first birthday, compared to White babies.
In other business, the number of food boxes distributed by the healthcare district in September remained flat compared to August, at 2,985 (compared to 2,989 for August).
Hi-Desert Medical Center has received approval to be receive patients who have suffered a stroke.
Combs said the district supply of PPE equipment is adequate both for the hospital and the continuing care center, and is compliant with a state law that requires a 90-day supply.
