HOME-MADE ROCKET LAUNCH NEAR AMBOY PLANNED FOR TOMORROW

An Apple Valley man is hoping the third time’s the charm, as he attempts to launch his newly designed steam-powered rocket into the air in Amboy
Saturday. Managing editor Tami Roleff says the limo driver’s rocket launch is a publicity stunt to raise money to launch him into space later in the
year…

“Mad” Mike Hughes had planned to launch his home-made rocket in Amboy last November, but his plans were derailed first by his rocket launcher—a converted RV—that broke down in his driveway, and then by the Bureau of Land Management which withdrew its permission to launch within hours of the scheduled launch. For Saturday’s flight, Hughes said he will be launching from private property and the launch will be vertical, so there won’t be a problem of crossing BLM land. Although Hughes says he doesn’t believe the Earth is round, he denies that he is a “Flat Earther.”

“I never stated or said this launch or the original jump of one mile was going to prove the flat Earth.”

His real goal?

“It was just a jump to raise the publicity for me and for the rocket to raise the money to go into space later in the year, which is a $1.8- to $2-million project.”

Hughes says Saturday’s launch will be streamed online and spectators will be run off by his own private security.
