Smoke and flames can engulf a house very quickly. Smoke kills three out of four people in home fires. To protect yourself, make sure you have working smoking detectors installed on every level of your home, and outside sleeping areas. Purchase and know how to use general purpose ABC-type fire extinguisher for all types of small fires. Keep lighters and matches out of the hands of children, and never smoke in bed. Think ahead, and prepare and escape plan; know at least two ways out of your house, even in low- or no-light conditions. Simple rules, but rules that could save lives.
