SOME HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS FROM COUNTY FIRE

The San Bernardino County Fire Department would like to remind you of the following holiday safety tips. Assignment reporter Mike Lipsitz explains some of the ways to ensure a safe holiday season…
Before setting up lighted decorations, check for burned-out lights, empty sockets and broken bulbs. Inspect wires for breaks or fraying and toss any damaged strands. Turn off tree lights before bed and when leaving the house. And plug no more than three light sets in a single outlet. If you use a natural tree, make a 1-inch cut at the base to open pores. The cut surface should be creamy-white. Choose a sturdy stand that holds at least a gallon of water. If the tree isn’t going right in the house after purchase, it should be stored in a bucket of water in away from wind and sun. In all cases, check and add water daily. Keep the tree away from heat sources. After the holidays, never burn it in a wood stove or fireplace; it burns too fast and is explosive. The best alternative is to recycle it through a local program.
