Hit-and-run trial begins as detectives present testimony

Troy Reynolds returned to court for a jury trial yesterday morning. Reynolds is the suspect in a hit-and-run collision that killed Joshua Barreras, a 16-year-old resident of Yucca Valley. On the evening of January 26, 2024, Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Deputies found Barreras lying unresponsive on the center median of Twentynine Palms Highway near the intersection with Avalon Avenue; he was pronounced deceased at the Hi-Desert Medical Center that night. Reynolds was identified by the Sheriff’s Department following a four-week investigation, and entered a “Not Guilty” plea.
After two years of court proceedings, a jury has been selected and trial began this week before Judge Sarah Oliver. District Attorney Jason Gueltzow is representing the prosecution, with Attorney James Rogan representing the defense.
Yesterday afternoon, the prosecution was still presenting evidence when court recessed for the week. Judge Oliver scheduled court to return on Tuesday morning for continued testimony as well as the presentation of evidence by the defense. Further, she suggested the attorneys may present closing arguments as early as Tuesday as well.
Troy Reynolds is charged with Felony Hit and Run Resulting in Permanent Injury or Death. He is currently out on $500,000 bail.
