HISTORICAL SOCIETY LAUNCHES NEW BOOK

The story of early ranchers and homesteaders who settled in and around Johnson Valley is a fascinating one. Reporter Mike Lipsitz is here to tell us about a book on the subject…

A new, revised edition of “Heart Bar Ranch and Johnson Valley Neighbors” by Martha Wood Coutant is a compact history of cattle ranching at Old Woman Springs Ranch and in the San Bernardino Mountains. Published by the Morongo Basin Historical Society, the nonprofit plans to launch the book at the March 11 Second Wednesday Lecture Series at the Hi-Desert Nature Museum in the Yucca Valley Community Center. Stan Coutant, the author’s son, will speak about his family’s homesteading experience in Johnson Valley in the 1950s. Morgan Reche will discuss his pioneering family in Landers. The lecture begins at 5:30 p.m., a $5 donation is requested; seating is limited. More information at MBHS.net.
