An iconic song about Twentynine Palms was written in the city in 1947 and recorded by national artists, including the Andrews Sisters. Managing editor Tami Roleff has more information about “The Lady from Twentynine Palms” in this historical highlight…
Allie Wrubel was living in Connecticut when he saw a real estate ad for the Campbell House in Twentynine Palms. Wrubel wanted a ranch, and his wife wanted to live in a dry climate, so they bought the Campbell House (also known as Roughly Manor), where they lived from 1946 until his death in 1973. The Campbell House, built in 1927 by homesteaders Bill and Elizabeth Campbell, included a swimming pool, 400 acres, and a stables. In 1947, Wrubel wrote the music and lyrics to The Lady from Twentynine Palms. Wrubel also wrote other popular songs such as “Zip a Dee Doo Dah,” and “The Lady in Red.”
