Hiker found dead in Joshua Tree National Park

UPDATED April 8, 2023: The deceased has been identified as Alexandru Matei, a resident of Twentynine Palms.

A 64 year-old male hiker was found dead in Joshua Tree National Park on Wednesday, April 5.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputies and Park Rangers responded to a hiking trail described as “remote” within the national park, and located the unresponsive hiker. It was determined at the scene that he was deceased, and a preliminary investigation revealed that he suffered a medical emergency during his hike.

There were no signs of foul play, and the Riverside County Coroner is continuing the investigation. The identity of the man has not been released.
