San Bernardino County reported 281 new coronavirus cases Tuesday, June 16, its highest one-day increase so far. The county has confirmed 7,796 cases; deaths remained at 228. The county also reached a new milestone in hospitalizations. On Monday, June 15, 221 patients were hospitalized with the disease, up from the previous high of 206 on Sunday, June 14.
Here in our Morongo Basin, there 61 confirmed cases: Yucca Valley with 27, Joshua Tree 15, Twentynine Palms 12, and Morongo Valley with seven. So far, 92,020 people have been tested for the disease in the county of 2.1 million residents, of which 8.5 percent were positive.
Testing has been increasing steadily this month. In early June, the county was averaging just under 1,700 test results per day, but that number has now risen to more than 2,000 for the first time ever. However, the number of positive tests has been increasing even more. On June 1, the county was averaging about 140 new cases per day, but it’s now approaching an average of 200 cases per day. A projected 4,749 people have recovered from the disease, according to the county’s data.
The time it takes for the virus to double in the community was 18.3 days.
