The Yucca Valley High School Trojan baseball teams traveled to historic Palm Springs Angel Stadium for a double header against Palm Springs High School Friday afternoon.
The Trojans found themselves down two runs in the early innings of game one, but their bats really caught fire in the fourth inning. Starting the inning was a double by senior Dovian Delgado, followed by a triple from sophomore Anthony Gutierrez, a single by junior Tim Parker, and finally, a single by junior Travis Shartel. This rally got the Trojans on the board with four runs. The fifth inning was just as productive at the plate, and the Trojans scored four more on singles by Gutierrez, senior Colden McGarvie, senior Luis Estrada, and junior Zach Schoenborn. Palm Springs was able to claw back into the game in the sixth inning by stringing a few hits together. The Trojans were not done yet and tacked on five more runs in the top of the seventh with doubles by Delgado and Gutierrez, and singles by sophomore Desmond Delgado and junior Broc Wilkinson. Final score: 13-8. Freshman Clay Smith pitched a no-hitter through five innings to get the win.
In the second half of the double header, the Trojans managed two runs in the third inning from a sacrifice fly by Tim Parker and stolen bases by Dovian Delgado. Delgado also contributed another single in the fifth inning, along with a double by his younger brother, Desmond Delgado, which resulted in two more across the plate. Travis Shartel pitched a complete game with no walks, one strikeout and only two earned runs. The Trojans’ defense was unable to slow down the Indians, as they kept the pressure on and forced some untimely and costly errors. Final score of the second game: Indians 9, Trojans 4.
