The Yucca Valley High School Lady Trojans basketball team won the Hesperia Christian Holiday tournament with a 45-20 win over Apple Valley Saturday night in Hesperia. The Yucca girls led 20-18 at the half but turned up the defensive pressure to take control of the game, out-scoring the Sun Devils 25-2 in the second half. Coach Jess Geeson said junior Taylor Spitz scored 17 points and was named tournament MVP. Senior Annika Dendekker added six points and was selected to the all-tournament team. Senior September Shaw-Fryer scored a season-high 15 points. The Lady Trojans are now 7-2 on the season.
Joshua Springs boys’ basketball evened their record to 3-3, beating the Upland Christian Eagles, 39-33, Friday night. Jesse Hagerman once again led the Lightning in scoring with 11, and added seven rebounds. Rickey White went seven of nine on free throws to finish with 9 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for a good overall game. Connor McClay added 10 rebounds to lead the team.
Yucca Valley High School boys’ soccer lost to a very seasoned Cathedral City High School by a score of 2 to 0. Coach Rodriguez said good team effort, led by sophomore defender Robert Henriquez and freshman defender Noah Baxter, came up short
Yucca Valley High School boys’ soccer team lost 6 to 0 to Desert Mirage, the eventual Tournament Champion. The young team played hard against a much more experienced Desert Mirage team. The Trojan Boys played with lots of effort. Coach Jorge Rodriguez said the team gained valuable experience at this tournament, and he is encouraged by the effort and quality the boys showed this weekend.
The Yucca Valley High School wrestling team competed this weekend, with the boys’ varsity going to Lancaster High School. The Yucca Valley boys placed multiple wrestlers with Damien Vasquez placing fourth, Trevor Scott placing fifth, Gabe Contreras placed fifth, Andrew Reyes placed fourth, Jake Merritt placed third and Onkar placed third, with approximately 300 boys competing in various weight classes.
The Yucca Valley girls’ wrestlers wrestled in Santa Ana, with Kat Kennedy placing fourth, Fernanda Macias seventh and Sahara Pena placed seventh place, with about 400 girls competing in various weight classes.
In high school sports tomorrow, the Joshua Springs girls basketball team will host Mesa Grande Academy at home. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
