HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: SCORES AND SCHEDULES

The Twentynine Palms boys basketball team began their season with a 70-56 win over Southwest High School in El Centro as their first opponent in the Imperial Tiger Classic tournament Monday night. Coach Kevin Cole said D’Shaun Barrett led scorers with 24 points, followed by Abraham Bell with 14. Seniors Andrew Wilson, Jimmy Schragge, Carson Zimarek, and Elijah Jones each scored six. Seniors Kyle Hope, Demetrius Holmes, and Travaun Morrow provided great defense, which led to many fast break points.

The Wildcats’ second game of the week was at home against Hemet. The Wildcats came away with a 53-38 victory. D’Shaun Barrett and Kyle Hope each hit three 3-pointers, to lead the scoring with 15 and 11 respectively. Elijah Jones chipped in with nine. Strong defense held the opponent to less than 10 points per quarter. Twentynine Palms will travel back to the Imperial Valley today to take on Calipatria High School in the Tiger Classic.

Both the varsity and junior varsity boys Twentynine Palms Wildcat soccer teams faced the visiting Banning Broncos. Coach Nathan Niles said they startled the visitors with a strong first half and goals by brothers Nick and Austun Stowers leading to a 2-0 lead at the break. Tight team commitment to defense in the second half led to an exciting 2-2 tie. Sophomore goalkeeper KJ Magwood-Morton had an excellent game behind the team with five spectacular saves. The jv team lost 3-0.

Coming up in high school sports tomorrow, the Yucca Valley High School boys’ soccer team will participate in the Desert Mirage Tournament Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, while the girls’ soccer team will take part in the Heritage Tournament Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

The Yucca Valley High School girls basketball team will play in the Hesperia Christian Tournament tomorrow,Friday, and Saturday.

The Trojan boys’ wrestling team will host Desert Hot Springs tomorrow, starting at 5 p.m.

Also tomorrow, the Twentynine Palms High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will travel away to play West Shores High School. The girls start at 3:15; the boys at 5 p.m.
