HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: SCORES AND SCHEDULES

The local Twentynine Palms Recreation basketball All-Stars were named “Kings of the IE” at Beaumont youth basketball tournament. Spokesman Ricky Shadowens said the eighth grade boys’ team battled back after a loss to find themselves in the championship game, but came up short and came in second place. The third and fourth, and the fifth and sixth grade boys both brought home the championships. The combination of two first-place finishes and the eighth grade boys’ second place earned the boys teams of Twentynine Palms the title of “Kings of the IE” and the annual trophy. The third and fourth grade girls came in third place in Beaumont while the fifth and sixth and the seventh and eighth girls both came in second place in their divisions.

The Yucca Valley High School junior varsity and varsity baseball teams travelled to Coachella Valley High School for a doubleheader on Saturday. Coach Brian Schoenborn said the varsity lost both games. The JV team won both of their games in workmanlike fashion, according to coach Jim Ruggiero.

The Twentynine Palms High School boys’ varsity tennis team traveled to Palm Valley on Monday. The Wildcats secured a victory with a 14-to-4 win over Palm Valley in non-conference play. The Wildcats were led in singles play by Jarod Burkes and John Lanza, each sweeping all three of their sets. In doubles action, Marcus Simon and Vincent Thomas swept all three of their sets, while Jose Valdez and Raul Hernandez took two sets, and Marquis Tarver and Frankie Muniz also took two sets in the Wildcat Victory. Coach Shay stated that the entire team put forth their best effort and came away with the victory.

Coming up in high school sports tomorrow, the Yucca Valley High School Trojan baseball team will travel away to play Granite Hills High School, starting at 3:15 p.m.

Also tomorrow, the Twentynine Palms High School Wildcat golf team will host Xavier College Prep at home. Tee time is 2:45.

The Wildcat track team will host the Desert Hot Springs Golden Eagles at home; the meet begins at 3 p.m.

And finally tomorrow, the Twentynine Palms High School tennis team will host Banning High School at home; first serve is at 3:15.
