Twentynine Palms High School boys’ basketball finished DeAnza league play against rival Yucca Valley High School last night. Coach Michael Schneider said it turned out to be a fierce battle throughout, with high tensions and stakes. After jumping to a 10-point lead for most of the game, Yucca Valley fought back and tied it late. The game was back and forth, but the ’Cats won by a score of 60-58. D’Shaun Barrett had 18 points, Jimmy Shragge and Andrew Wilson added 12. Abraham Bell chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds. With the win, Twentynine Palms secured a 12-6 overall record, and a share of the De Anza League championship with a record of 10-2.
Thursday night saw Joshua Springs Christian School wrap up its regular season by clinching their second consecutive Victory League championship, as they hosted and defeated the Mesa Grande Academy Cardinals 59-44. The Lightning now stand at 18-3 on the season. Tyler Pascale scored 22 on the night, breaking the single season 3-point record at 53. Jordan Lovejoy (12), Luke Humphreville and Caleb Kint (8), Clint Humphreville (6), and Joey Hagerman (3) also scored for Joshua Springs. The Lightning move into CIF playoffs next week with a likely top 4 seed in Division 6 action.
The Twentynine Palms Wildcat varsity boys’ soccer team concluded their season last night against the rival Yucca Valley Trojans in Yucca Valley in an exciting come-from-behind 2-to-1 victory—their first league victory in 10 years. Both goals were scored by freshman Samuel Smith on assists from junior Austin Stowers. Freshman keeper KJ Morton recorded 14 saves to lead the team to the win.
The Yucca Valley High School girls’ soccer team hosted Twentynine Palms High School in De Anza League play. Coach Scott Phillips said the Lady Trojans dominated play and finished with a 3-0 victory. Sophomore Alexia Missett (two goals) and freshman Jackie Bolha (one goal) provided the offense. Senior Jennifer Luersen had two assists and freshman Kiersten King added an assist. Junior Nikole Cody recorded her fifth shutout, tying her own school record.
In high school sports tomorrow, the Yucca Valley High School girls’ wrestling team will participate in the Girls’ Master meet.
