The Yucca Valley High School girls’ wrestling team put on a great performance at the Southern Division Championships Saturday at Upland High School. Coach Brandon Whitbred said the Lady Trojans tied for sixth place overall in a field of over 50 schools. All five of the Trojan girls wrestled well, and four out of the five Lady Trojan wrestlers placed in the top eight, thus securing their right to compete in the Girls’ CIF Southern Section Regional Championships this coming Friday and Saturday, February 13 and February 14. Congratulations for Julianne Fuentes, seventh at 111 pounds; Fernanda Macias, sixth at 126 pounds; and for the first time since great Trojan wrestler Vinny Maraj in 2008, to CIF Champions Vanesa Contreras at 116 pounds, and Katherine Kennedy at 137 pounds. Congratulations and best wishes this weekend at the regional championships.

In sports action tomorrow, the Yucca Valley High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will travel away to Rancho Mirage High School. The girls start at 3:15, the boys at 5 p.m.

The Trojan boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will travel away to Rancho Mirage High School. The girls play at 5, the boys at 6:30.

The Twentynine Palms High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will play Desert Mirage High School. The girls will travel away; the boys play at home. Both games start at 5 p.m.

The Wildcat boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will travel away to Thermal to play Desert Mirage High School. Tip-off for girls is at 5; boys at 6:30.
