HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: SCORES AND SCHEDULES

In high school sports, the Yucca Valley High School boys basketball teams traveled to Big Bear Friday. Coach Matt Jennings said the varsity team fell 54-70 in one of the final preseason games.
Team leaders were Luke Yakimow, with 10 points and five rebounds; Bryce Mitchell, nine points and four rebounds; Jr. Rodriguez, nine points and three assists.
The junior varsity team won 44-40. They rallied back behind a strong second half defensive spark by Tayten Shartel with 19 points, three steals. Cesar Olvera had with 11 points and three steals. 
 
The Twentynine Palm High School boys’ basketball came up short against Shadow Hills High School, 78-74.
The Wildcats were paced by senior point guard Tarion Napolean with 19 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
 
The Yucca Valley High School Lady Trojan basketball team rallied from a 15-point second quarter deficit to beat Redlands East Valley High School 54-50 in overtime Friday night. Coach Jess Geeson said with the win, the Lady Trojans claimed seventh place in the 16-team West Valley Mustang Classic tournament.
Senior Angie Reutgen scored a game-high 17 points, all in the second half, and was named to the all-tournament team. Sophomore Sara Mills knocked in nine points; freshmen Chloe McNellie added eight points and junior Coy Smith chipped in seven points for the Yucca girls who improved their record to 2-3 on the season. 
 
Joshua Springs Christian School beat visiting Desert Christian Academy 34-30. Down nine points at halftime, Joshua Springs closed the game on a 21-8 run to win.
Coach Adam Everhart said standouts were Dillon Lovejoy with 15 points; Jaren Pendergrass, nine points; Jeff Bishop, five points (he hit two free throws with 40 seconds left, to go up five points and clinching the game).
 
The Yucca Valley High School Wrestling team defeated Banning 69-12 at Banning High school Friday night.
Coach Larry Giron said John Cruz, Tim Harris, Angel Torres, Chase Sperry, and Malaky Chiu all won their matches by pins. The fastest pin of the night was made by John Cruz in 22 seconds. Notable matches were Onkar Sandhu who defeated masters qualifier Brandon Ceja 8-2, narrowly missing winning by a pin as time ran out in the second period.

In high school sports today, the Yucca Valley boys’ basketball team will host Sultana High School from Hesperia. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
