The Yucca Valley High School wrestling teams stayed busy over the holiday break. Coach Brandon Whitbred said the varsity boys posted their share of strong showings as well, capped by the team champion honors at the Beaumont Tournament. Trevor Scott and Gabriel Contreras each placed fifth, and Michael McKay and Isaac Arismendiz each placed third at the Rim of the World tournament. The Trojan girls and novice wrestlers won the first annual Ponsford Classic at Yucca Valley High School last Tuesday. The girls had strong showings in two other tournaments over the break, highlighted by Vanessa Contreras’ third place at Bishop Amat, and second place at Corona, and Katherine Kennedy’s first place finish at Corona. The varsity team, 3 – 0 in De Anza League competition, next take on league foe Rancho Mirage 6:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Trojan Gym.
This past Monday and Tuesday, the 29th and 30th of December, the Twentynine Palms High School boys soccer team had a successful tournament appearance in the 13th annual Jerry Lyle Pettis Memorial Cup at Loma Linda Academy in Loma Linda California. Coach Nathan Niles said sophomore Jayson Hanlon won the Top Juggler Award in the boys’ division, and the team came out of the eight-team field with a third place finish with a record of one win, no losses, and three ties. Goal scorers were Samuel Smith, 4; Ronnie Rondeau, 2; Jonathan Poore, 1; Nicholas Stowers, 1; Tristan Burleson, 1; and Jake Thacker, 1.
In high school sports tomorrow, the Yucca Valley High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will host Desert Mirage High School at home. The girls’ start at 3:15; the boys at 5.
The Twentynine Palms High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will play Desert Hot Springs tomorrow. The girls play at home; the boys travel away to Desert Hot Springs. Both games start at 5 p.m.
