The Twentynine Palms High School Girls Basketball team competed in the Play 4 Kay tournament in San Juan Capistrano Saturday. Top Division 4 teams competed in 10 different games to raise money for breast cancer. Twentynine Palms beat Cantwell Sacred Heart 54-39. Twentynine Palms’ record is now: 18-and-4 overall, 6-and-0 in league. Coach Tim Stanford said Tusia Brown earned MVP of the game honors by posting a game high 17 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocked shots. Nokomis Cabrera added 12 points and three assists, Paige Rossi set the tone early with seven second-quarter points and ended with nine in an outstanding offensive and defensive performance. Andraliah Lee added nine points, nine rebounds, four steals, and senior captain Cherokee Turner anchored the middle of the defense adding 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots along with dishing out three assists.
Yucca Valley High School was the site of the 2013-2014 De Anza League Wrestling Individual Finals. Six Yucca Valley wrestlers qualified for CIF, finishing in the top three in their respective weight classes, and qualified to wrestle in the CIF Coastal Division Championships at Westminster High School February 21 and 22. Assistant Coach Brandon Whitbread gave congratulations to champions Cameron Merritt (138 lbs.), and Dakota Brickey (285 lbs.), runners up Andrew Reyes (120 lbs.), Anthony Espinoza (126 lbs.), and Martin Kennedy (170 lbs.), and third-place finisher Trevor Scott (106 lbs.).
On the JV side, congratulations to champions Jack Campos (113 lbs.) and Rene Gamboa (182 lbs.), to runner up Delbert O’Brien (138 lbs.), and to third place finishers Julieanne Fuentes (113 lbs.), Julian Henretty (120 lbs.), Christian Oliver (132 lbs.), and Kyle Cleveland (182 lbs.).
