In high school sports, the Yucca Valley High School Lady Trojan girls’ varsity basketball team opened the West Valley High School Mustang Classic tournament with a first-round win over the Perris Panthers 47-30 last night in Hemet. Coach Jess Geeson said the Yucca girls held a 21-18 halftime lead, and outscored the Panthers 26-12 in the second half to seal the win and even their record at 1-1 to start the season. The team will play Inland Empire power Valley View High School tonight at 7:30 p.m. in a second round game.

Sophomore Sara Mills led the attack with a game high 17 points. She was followed by senior Angie Reutgen and sophomore Loryn Brimhall who pumped in eight points each. Senior Zoe Beers added five points.

The Twentynine Palms High School girls’ basketball team raised their record to 4 and 0 with their win over Chaparral in the first round of the West Valley tip-off with the score of 52 to 46. Coach Tim Stanford said the ’Cats held Chaparral to 14 points in the second half with a tenacious defensive effort to bring home the win.

Leading scorer on the night was Gabby Mackall with 13 points and seven rebounds. Kate Bobadilla had nine points and five rebounds. Riley King had eight points and 10 rebounds. Carveona Garner had eight points and Taylor Scamman had five points, 11 rebounds, and 5 steals.
 
In high school sports today, the Yucca Valley High School girls’ basketball team will participate in the West Valley High School Mustang Classic tournament today, Thursday, and Friday.

Also today, the Twentynine Palms High School boys’ basketball team will participate in the Showdown at the Snake Pit.

And the Twentynine Palms High School girls’ soccer team will travel away to Palm Springs. The match starts at 5 p.m.
