Twentynine Palms High School track and field traveled to Desert Hot Springs to compete in the last ever De Anza League track and field finals meet. Coach Ronda Lockett-Morton said the Wildcats saw nine personal records set, two season records, and a school record fall.
Shania Newby broke the 19-year-old 100-meter sprint record with a time of 12.69. She also earned first place in the 200 meter and is an automatic qualifier in both events.
Jonathan Carson (200m), KJ Magwood-Morton (300m hurdles), and Tucker Thornburg (3200m) also qualified to compete in the CIF Preliminary meet at Carpinteria High School next week.
Mallory Hutchinson led all Wildcats with 26 points, earning second in the long jump, fourth in triple jumps, fourth in the 100m race, and winning the girls’ high jump with a mark of 4'7 and an automatic qualifying spot for CIF.
Junior thrower Adam Mapuatuli was named Boys Field De Anza League Co-MVP for his efforts in the shot put and discus. He earned a trip to Carpinteria in both events and threw a personal record of 47'3 in the shot put.
