Residents in Pioneertown have had high levels of arsenic in their water supply for years, a situation that has inhibited new construction in the area. At last night’s meeting of the Hi-Desert Water District board of directors, the board unanimously approved an agreement with the county that will give Pioneertown residents access to a clean, reliable water supply—if and when the county ever builds the infrastructure to deliver the water. Under the agreement, the county will have access to the district’s Warrant Valley sub-basin, in exchange for an equal amount of water from the county’s Ames/Reche water basin. All costs involved in the water exchange, including the water district’s staff time involved in the agreement, will be paid by the county.
