California agriculture is among the most developed and productive in the world, generating billions of dollars a year. The labor force, however, that drives this industry has long been poorly paid and socially marginalized. This talk will explore California farm worker history and how it fits in the broader history of agricultural development. From strikes in the 1930s to advocacy groups today, farm labor has evolved to changing conditions. This talk will look at how possibilities for fair work are tied to agriculture’s history. The lectures start at noon at the Hi-Desert Nature Museum. Admission is $5 or free for museum members/sponsors.
