HI-DESERT MEDICAL CENTER SAFETY REPORT CARD SHOWS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

The Hi-Desert Medical Center, and hospitals nationwide, recently got a report card on their efforts towards safety. Reporter David Haldane said the score shows a need for some improvement…
Patient safety at the Hi-Desert Medical Center is holding steady, but has lots of room for improvement. That’s the gist of a biannual report card issued recently by the Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit organization that tracks hospital safety nationwide.
The group’s Fall report card gives the Joshua Tree facility an overall grade of C. That’s the same as last Spring’s rating and a full grade higher than those of the previous three years. But the report also mentions several concerns, particularly in the areas of safety-related training, effective leadership, and communication with doctors and nurses.
In response, the hospital issued a statement reiterating its strong commitment to patient safety and quality. “While we…are disappointed,” the statement said in part, “we take our responsibility…seriously and are implementing…initiatives” to “improve our performance.”
Among them: enhanced training focusing on effective communication and documentation.
