On May 14, visual and performing arts, tree plantings, and films will be streamed live from Joshua Tree’s Harrison House for 24 hours at louharrisonhouse.org. Creative activities from around the globe will be posted simultaneously. The event marks the 100th birthday of Lou Harrison. Harrison’s admirers say he left a legacy of beauty, acceptance, activism and concern for humanity and the earth. Organizers invite others from around the world to engage by creating art or planting trees. They say art can unite people across borders in the spirit of peace and compassion and that is their aim. Scheduled to appear at Harrison House are notable Southeast Asian Gamelan musicians and dancers, famed solo cellist Emil Miland, and native plant specialist Robin Kobaly. Harrison tributes from around the world will also be featured along with Eva Soltes’ documentary on the composer. Harrison House is at 6881 Mount Lassen Avenue in Joshua Tree.
