On this date 240 years ago, the United States Marine Corps was born when the Continental Congress authorized the establishment of a battalion of Marines, and the first Marines enlisted in Tun Tavern, Philadelphia. Every year, Marines around the world—active duty and retired, and their families—gather to honor their heritage with a celebration that includes birthday cake, toasts, a meal, and dancing. In his official birthday message to Marines, Marine Corps Commandant Robert Neller writes, “As we celebrate the 240th birthday of our Corps, we pay tribute to all who have served and we remember our fallen heroes. We take great pride in our legacy and in the fine men and women who carry our colors into the future. And we extend heartfelt thanks to our families for their steadfast support.” Happy birthday, Marines.
