Scam artists who call are now using a method called spoofing to trick you into believing they’re someone they’re not. With more, here’s Rebecca Havely…
If you get a call that looks like it’s from the Social Security Administration office, it may be a scam artist. Spoofing means that scammers can call from anywhere but make your caller ID show a different number, often one that looks legit. Like a scam running now nationwide, the so-called SSA calls. Your caller ID may say Social Securtiy with their actual number displayed. Scammers are spoofing the number to make the call look real. They then press you for personal information such as your Social Security number. They may promise increased benefits or threatening to cut off your benefits, things an actual SSA worker would never do. If you have any doubts at all hang up, then report the call to the SSA’s Office of Inspector General at 1-800-269-0271 report calls to: https://oig.ssa.gov/report and to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.
