H.O.P.E. – Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement looks to help the unhoused in Morongo Basin

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department conducted outreach to unhoused people in the Morongo Basin on Friday (December 16). The Sheriff’s Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement, known as H.O.P.E. was explained by Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station Captain Robert Warrick during his appearance on last week’s Z1077 Up Close Show.

We have deputy Sheriff’s who have been doing this for years. They are not going out to do warrant checks or to see if they have drugs in their pockets, they are Deputy Sheriffs charged with connecting this person to people with services. What made you homeless, are homeless by choice. Are you a veteran? Will you accept help? And a lot of times, we connect people with services and they’ve been highly successful.

Here in the Morongo Basin, the H.O. team was able to speak with twenty-one individual across eighteen encampments in the high desert. Eighteen people were referred to assistance programs and six people were provided with direct assistance. Three of the people the outreach team spoke with requested assistance with connecting to families in other areas, and the outreach team is working on reunification efforts. If you know of persons experiencing homelessness who are in need of services, please contact the Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement Team at 909-387-0623 or [email protected]
