For 44 years, Gubler Orchids in Landers has been providing free educational guided tours of their working orchid greenhouses. Beginning January 2, Gubler Orchids will begin charging a nominal fee for the same tours at $5 per person. Children under 12 will still be free when accompanied by an adult. Owner Chris Gubler said, “This has been a difficult decision to make. We have been wrestling with this issue for the last few years.”
Kelsey Gubler, representing the fourth-generation at Gubler Orchids, said, “The nominal charge of $5 is to offset the cost of providing the tours. Our tours are one of the most unique tours in the orchid industry and do have a value.”
Gubler Orchids will still provide free tours during the Orchid Festival the first weekend in October. The guided tours take visitors throughout 42,000 square foot of greenhouses with thousands of orchid plants in various stages of blooming. The guide explains about orchids, the operations of the greenhouse, and the history of the family-run business.
Tours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., starting every 30 minutes on the hour and are about 30 minutes long. Since this is a working greenhouse, closed-toe walking shoes are required for the tours; sandals are not permitted in the greenhouse.
