Mention Giant Rock to a local old timer and you’re sure to get a story. The iconic Landers monolith has been a source of mystery, myth and mayhem for as long as man has been in contact. Reporter Mike Lipsitz has more about an effort to bring those stories together…
“Giant Rock Round Table” is an informal get together spearheaded by Hi-Desert Nature Museum’s Exhibit Projects Director, Karyl Newman. Newman, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, has been studying the fascinating and sometimes bizarre history of Giant Rock. Her efforts are being organized into a digital exhibit called “Our Giant Rock: a Community Touchstone in the Mojave” set to open at the museum this fall. The Giant Rock Round Table offers an opportunity for Newman to share some of her research and for others to share memories, stories, adventures, photos and videos for possible inclusion in the upcoming exhibit. Join Newman from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, at the Hi-Desert Nature Museum in the Yucca Valley Community Center Complex. This is a free event; light refreshments will be served.
