Since the Hi-Desert Nature Museum received a California Humanities Grant last December, museum project director Karyl Newman and staff have been working on a planned exhibit called "Our Giant Rock: a Community Touchstone in the Mojave." Teams from the Landers Community Association, Mojave Desert Land Trust, and an organization known as Blight Sites coordinated with the Bureau of Land Management Barstow Field Office and have set October 6, National Public Lands Day, as Giant Rock Cleanup Day. More than just a cleanup, the event will emphasize stories and stewardship at historic Giant Rock. Project experts including a retired bomb squad detective and an anthropologist and Director of the Cultural Resources Management Department for the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians will be at the cleanup event with information, stories, and more. Volunteers should show up for check-in at 8 a.m. Wear appropriate clothing and bring plenty of water. Those with pickups and trailers are encouraged to show up and assist transporting the trash. The event will conclude by noon.
