Over the weekend, staff from the Joshua Tree National Park announced that the Geology Fire, which burned across 1088 acres inside the park, had been completely contained.
The fire broke out around 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, and burned for approximately one week. Initially reported to have burned across 1088 acres, the fire never moved beyond that initial acreage.
Fire crews from multiple agencies will continue to patrol the area, checking for remaining heat. Park staff will continue to repair damage from suppression activity and assess the need for rehabilitation of affected areas.
Visitors may see wind-blown gray ash near the fire area. This may look similar to smoke, but ash moves differently and dissipates quickly. Visitors should report any true smoke they see to a park ranger.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
