Military spouse Kajiel Sullivan is the force behind Twentynine Palms’ first ever celebration of Juneteenth, which marks the end of slavery in America. As a newcomer to the area, she noted some division in the community and thinks the celebration of freedom may bring residents together.
Called “Juneteenth in 29!”, the event is currently scheduled for June 15 at Luckie Park. Organizers are planning a Jeopardy-style trivia contest on American history, spoken word artists, music, games and free hot dogs. Plans also include an exhibition entitled “Pioneers on the Road to Freedom.”
