Juneteenth, a celebration of emancipation from slavery, was named to mark the date, June 19, 1865, when slaves in Galveston, Texas first received word of their freedom. A community celebration is being planned in Twentynine Palms, and fundraising is underway. Reporter Heather Clisby has the details…
Military spouse Kajiel Sullivan is the force behind Twentynine Palms’ first ever celebration of Juneteenth, which marks the end of slavery in America. As a newcomer to the area, she noted some division in the community and thinks the celebration of freedom may bring residents together. Called “Juneteenth in 29!”, the event is currently scheduled for June 15 at Luckie Park. Organizers are planning a Jeopardy-style trivia contest on American History, spoken word artists, music, games, and free hot dogs. Plans also include an exhibition entitled “Pioneers on the Road to Freedom.” Those who wish to donate and help this event become a reality are encouraged to visit the ‘Juneteenth in 29!
