Funding for a new wastewater treatment plant for the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms is included in this year’s national security authorization legislation, according to Representative Paul Cook. The House Armed Services Committee is expected to vote on the bill later this week.

The current wastewater treatment facility was constructed in 1952 and has undergone numerous modifications to support the increased demand of up to 28,000 people. It is prone to excessive evaporation, causing the installation to lose approximately 4.1 million gallons annually of treated wastewater.

Paul Cook

Cook said the current facility has exceeded its useful lifespan as it can no longer meet either the state-issued permit requirements or the state and federal water conservation requirements. Cook added that a new wastewater treatment facility could also possibly serve the City of Twentynine Palms as well.
