Over the past century, adventurous desert motorists have visited the Twentynine Palms area by car, years before Joshua Tree National Park was even established. Reporter Andrew Dieleman tells us how to join the Desert Institute’s virtual Old Schoolhouse Lecture Series Friday (April 9) for a fascinating look at the century-old driving culture that helped shape the National Park we know today…
With a doctorate’s degree in American Environmental History, Cane West is a hybrid park ranger and historian, and a seven-year veteran of the National Park Service, who interprets nature-focused parks from the perspective of human use and management through time. West’s lecture will focus on how vehicle travel to Twentynine Palms over the past century helped accelerate the rise of Southern California driving culture and shaped Joshua Tree National Park. The virtual lecture is $5 per person and will be held Friday, April 9, beginning at 7 p.m.
